Is an Insulated Garage Door Worth It in Texas?

Quick answer

For most attached garages in Central Texas, an insulated garage door is worth it. It slows the heat coming through the largest opening in the house, keeps the garage and the rooms next to or above it more comfortable, and makes the door stronger and quieter. It matters most for attached garages, garages used as a workshop or gym, and garages with a room above. For a detached garage used only for parking, a non-insulated door can be enough.

A garage door is often the largest opening in a house. In an Austin summer, what it is made of makes a real difference to the garage and the rooms around it.

How an insulated door helps in the heat

A single layer steel door has nothing behind the steel to slow heat. An insulated door has a layer of foam between two steel skins, which slows heat moving from the sun facing outside into the garage. A west- or south facing door benefits the most.

Other benefits

  • Stronger panels that dent less easily
  • A quieter door, because the foam dampens rattling
  • More comfortable rooms that share a wall or ceiling with the garage

What R-value means

R-value measures how well the door resists heat flow. Higher is better. Compare R-values between models from the same manufacturer, and ask for the figure in writing when you get a quote.

Polystyrene or polyurethane

Polystyrene doors use rigid foam panels set into the door. Polyurethane doors have foam injected between the steel skins, which bonds to them; for the same thickness they usually insulate better and make a stiffer, quieter door.

When insulation matters less

A detached garage used only to park a car, with no air conditioning and no rooms around it, gains less from an insulated door. Even then, the added strength and quieter operation can be worth it.

Does an insulated garage door keep the garage cooler in Texas?

It slows the heat coming in through the door, so the garage heats up less, especially with a sun facing door. It does not cool the garage the way air conditioning does.

Is polyurethane better than polystyrene for a garage door?

For the same thickness, polyurethane usually insulates better and makes a stiffer, quieter door. Polystyrene doors cost less.

Do I need new springs with an insulated door?

An insulated door is heavier, so the springs must be sized for it. A new door is installed with springs matched to its weight.
