Garage Door FAQ
Short, direct answers to the questions we hear most often. Each answer links to more detail where it helps.
Repairs
Why won’t my garage door open?
The most common cause is a broken spring. Others are a failed opener, a snapped cable, or a locked manual latch. If you heard a loud bang and the door now feels very heavy, it is the spring. See spring repair.
Why won’t my garage door close?
Usually the safety sensors. If the opener light blinks and the door reverses, check that nothing is blocking the sensors near the floor and that both indicator lights are steady. See sensor repair.
Is it safe to use a garage door that is making new noises?
New grinding, popping or scraping is a warning. It is generally safe to keep using the door for a short time, but have it checked soon. Stop using it if it is crooked, jerking, or a cable looks loose.
How long does a typical repair take?
Most common repairs, including spring, cable and roller replacement, are completed in one visit of about an hour or two.
Springs
How do I know if my garage door spring is broken?
Look at the spring above the door. A broken torsion spring has a visible gap in the coil. The door will also be very heavy to lift and the opener will struggle or stop.
Can I replace a garage door spring myself?
We strongly advise against it. Torsion springs are wound under high tension and can cause severe injury if handled without the correct tools and training.
Should I replace both springs if only one broke?
Yes, in most cases. Both springs have the same number of cycles on them, so the second usually fails soon after the first.
Openers
Which is better, a belt drive or chain drive opener?
Belt drives are quieter and are the better choice for attached garages. Chain drives cost less and are very durable. See our belt vs chain comparison.
Can my opener be repaired, or do I need a new one?
Many faults are repairable: gears, capacitors, sensors, remotes. Replacement makes sense when the circuit board fails on an older unit or parts are discontinued. See opener repair.
Will my garage door work in a power outage?
Only if the opener has battery backup. Otherwise, pull the red release cord with the door fully closed and lift it by hand.
New doors
How do I choose a new garage door?
Decide on style, material, insulation and windows, in that order. Our garage door style guide walks through each option.
Is an insulated garage door worth it in Austin?
For attached garages, yes, particularly if the door faces west or south or there is a room above. See insulated garage doors.
How long does installation take?
Most single door replacements are completed in one day once the door has arrived.
Maintenance
How often should a garage door be serviced?
Once a year for most homes, and more often for heavy or heavily used doors. See maintenance and tune-ups.
What should I lubricate, and with what?
Use a silicone or lithium garage door lubricant on springs, hinges and steel roller bearings. Do not lubricate the tracks or nylon roller tires.
