Design details
- Panel pattern. Vertical planks with trim boards arranged as a frame, a Z-brace or an X-brace.
- Windows. A row of square or arched lites across the top section.
- Hardware. Decorative handles and strap hinges complete the swing door illusion.
- Finish. Painted white or a deep colour for farmhouse style, or a wood tone for warmth.
Steel, composite or wood
Stamped steel presses the carriage pattern into an insulated steel door. It is the most affordable route and needs the least upkeep.
Steel with composite overlay adds real depth, with trim boards applied over a steel base.
Real wood is the most authentic and the most demanding. In Central Texas sun, a wood door needs regular refinishing to keep from drying and cracking.
Homes they suit
Carriage house doors look at home on craftsman bungalows, modern farmhouses, Tudor and cottage styles, and Hill Country homes with stone and timber. In neighbourhoods with older housing, they are often chosen because they look right for the era of the house.

Carriage House door FAQs
Do carriage house doors swing open?
No. They are sectional doors that roll up overhead. The swing door look comes from the panel design and hardware.
Are carriage house doors insulated?
Most steel and composite carriage doors are available insulated. Ask for the insulation level when comparing models.
