Flush Panel Garage Doors

A flush panel door has completely flat sections, with no raised or recessed panels. The result is a calm, uninterrupted surface that lets the rest of the house take the attention. It is the base for many modern designs and a tidy choice for any home.

Design options

  • Surface. Smooth for a crisp look, or light wood grain texture that hides fingerprints and small marks.
  • Grooves. Completely plain, or with fine horizontal grooves that create a plank effect.
  • Windows. None at all, a row across the top, or a vertical stack on one side.
  • Colour. Flush doors look good matched to the siding or trim, or as a deliberate contrast.

Insulation and strength

Flat sections show dents and waviness more readily than patterned ones, so construction quality matters. An insulated, steel backed door with foam bonded between two steel skins is much stiffer than a single layer door and keeps its flat appearance. See insulated garage doors for the options.

Upkeep

Wash the door a couple of times a year with mild soap and water to remove dust and pollen. Smooth, dark finishes show dirt and water spots sooner than textured ones, so they benefit from more frequent rinsing.

Do flush panel doors dent easily?

A thin, uninsulated flush door can. An insulated door with steel on both sides resists dents far better. Ask about steel thickness and construction when comparing doors.

What is the difference between flush and modern doors?

Flush describes the panel surface: flat. Modern describes the overall design. Many modern doors are flush doors with a particular window layout and colour.
